Photographs share the same legal protection and rights on the World Wide Web as they do in other forms of print media, such as newspapers, magazines, brochures, billboards, and other media. Each of these images is protected under the Federal Copyright Act. One of the basic rights granted by the copyright law is the ability of the photographer to control the reproduction of the image. Regardless of the media or specific application, it is required, by law, for the user of the image to find the owner of the copyrighted material and seek authorization for use. Illegal usage of an image is considered copyright infringement and is a serious federal offense. Understand and respect the value of the images to the owner and get permission before usage.
